African American Vernacular Photography

by: Brian Wallis
These selections from the Daniel Cowin Collection make up an extraordinary group of images of African Americans in a variety of genres and poses, including formal studio portraits, casual snapshots, images of children, images of uniformed soldiers, wedding portraits and so-called "Southern-views" made for tourist consumption, all dating from 1860 to 1960. While some of the sitters are celebrities of their day, the majority are unnamed Americans posing for their portrait. They attest to photography's ability to both record personal history for private uses and to become a document--to document history in a wider context.

The Face in the Lens: Anonymous Photographs

by: Robert Flynn Johnson
Anonymous photography has a magic all its own. The intriguing images assembled here by collector and curator Robert Flynn Johnson are all mysterious, but their appeal is various. By turns poignant, humorous, erotic, and disturbing, their subject is the human condition. In ten stunning chapters every aspect of human experience--both public and private--is explored. Richly reproduced and with subtle tonalities marking their age, over 220 photographs showcase the work of photographers whose identities have been lost in time.

And what of the films and photographs that want us to believe there was no death and destruction? This book asks how such images have shaped our memories and our memorialization of World War II and the Holocaust.

In the Vernacular: Photography of the Everyday

by: Stacey McCarroll Cutshaw, Ross Barrett
Since the inception of photography in the early nineteenth century, photographs have been made, used, collected, and discarded in greatly increasing numbers. Despite the photograph's persistence in daily life, until recently most types of everyday photography have remained unexamined by historians and have been absent from the walls of galleries and museums. In response to this omission, some scholars have begun to consider photography as a "vernacular" practice. This reframing of the history of photography serves as the starting point for "In the Vernacular: Photography of the Everyday".
